How the estimate is calculated

The calculator divides the word count by the selected words-per-minute speed, then rounds the result up to the next second. At the default 200 words per minute, a 500-word passage is estimated at 2 minutes 30 seconds.

For a non-empty text that takes less than a minute, the result says “less than 1 min”. Empty text returns 0 min 0 sec.

Choose a reading speed

The default is 200 words per minute, and the slider ranges from 100 to 500. Reading speed varies with familiarity, language, text difficulty, accessibility needs, and whether someone is reading silently or aloud. Treat this as a planning estimate, not a promise.

  • Use a slower setting for dense or technical material.
  • For a speech or presentation, read the passage aloud and time a rehearsal.
  • Adjust the speed to better reflect the audience and reading context.

Check the exact passage

Paste the content you plan to use, including headings if they will be read. The word count treats groups separated by whitespace as words. Copy and Download export the word count, selected speed, and estimated time.
