Free online character counter

Check the length of a title, caption, message, or form response. The character counter shows total characters, characters without whitespace, lines, and words while you type.

Count characters, including whitespace, lines, and words.

What is included in the character count?

The total includes every character in the text, including spaces, punctuation, tabs, and line breaks. “Characters without whitespace” removes all whitespace, not just the ordinary space between words. This makes it useful when a service excludes whitespace from its limit.

The count follows JavaScript string length. Most letters count as one; some emoji and combined Unicode symbols can count as more than one code unit, so a platform with its own counter may show a different total.

Lines and words

Each line break separates lines, and an empty line between paragraphs is still a line. An empty input has zero lines; a trailing line break creates a final empty line. Words are groups of characters separated by whitespace.

Result

9 characters · 8 without whitespace · 2 lines · 2 words

Use it with a character limit

Paste the exact text you plan to submit. Include spaces, punctuation, and line breaks if the destination counts them. Keep a small margin below the published limit when possible, because some platforms count links, emoji, or formatted text differently.

  • Check the destination platform’s current rules before trimming a post.
  • For a form field, paste only the content that will go into that field.
  • Use Characters without whitespace only when the stated limit excludes whitespace.

Frequently asked questions

Are spaces and punctuation counted?

Yes. The total character count includes spaces, punctuation, tabs, and line breaks.

Does “without whitespace” remove line breaks too?

Yes. It removes all whitespace, including spaces, tabs, and line breaks.

Why might an emoji count as two characters?

Some emoji are represented by multiple UTF-16 code units. TextTools uses JavaScript string length, while other services may count Unicode symbols differently.
