How to count characters, including spaces

A clear checklist for counting every character in a caption, title, form response, or short message.

What counts as a character?

A character count commonly includes letters, numbers, punctuation, spaces, tabs, and line breaks. If a service says its limit includes spaces, keep whitespace in the text you check rather than removing it first.

Emoji and combined symbols can be counted differently by different systems. Some programming environments count UTF-16 code units, while others count Unicode code points or visible grapheme clusters. That is why a social platform may report a different total from a general-purpose counter.

Check the exact text you will submit

Paste the final wording, including punctuation and line breaks, into the Character Counter. Check both the total and the count without whitespace, and use whichever definition the destination specifies.

Leave a little room below the published limit when possible. Links, formatting, and emoji may receive special treatment on individual platforms.

A note about emoji and Unicode

A visible symbol is not always stored as one unit. Skin-tone modifiers, joined emoji, and combining accents can consist of multiple code points or code units. A character counter should explain which convention it uses so the result is easier to interpret.

TextTools uses JavaScript string length for the total. Use the destination’s own counter as the final authority when the limit is strict.
